The Settlement of Industry

Body
Halfway between Atlanta and Holdrege, Nebraska, and one mile north of highway 6 & 34 is the site of what once was the Industry Settlement. Now all that remains to show where this village once existed is the Industry Cemetery. According to the historical bulletin called Phelps Helps Andy Wyatt was the first to come to the area in 1878. Holdrege had not become a reality yet. The village had a blacksmith, a general store, drug store, harness maker, woman's hat shop, attorney, and a Justice of the peace. In 1880, Industry School District 39 was built with church services being held there. Between 1880 and 1884 diphtheria came into the community and the Industry Cemetery was started. At least 15 children died in that four year span and some adults. The cemetery is still in use today.
